Recent news on the UACM affair

The local legislature has now taken the "UACM affair" in its hands, and has forced our Dean, Dra. Orozco-Orozco, and the head of university senate, Mr. Carlos Arriaga, to negotiate with the very people who assaulted them in the recent takeover of the UACM office building. A well defined group in the legislature is putting political pressure on the university officials in order to make them accept a "peaceful, negotiated solution" that would leave the attackers with a small majority in the university senate, and thus with the power to pick the next Dean of the UACM. Two members of the local legislature, Ms. Yuriri Ayala Zuñiga (also a "student" at UACM, with nine years of enrollment) and Ms. Cipactli Dinorah Pizano Osorio, are publicly demanding the resignation of Dean Orozco-Orozco. This two congresspersons are political operators of  (self-styled professor) Mr. René Bejarano, a local political kingpin. Generally well informed sources identify Mr. Bejarano as the mastermind behind the turmoil at UACM. This man, who has seen the inside of a prision because of a grifting scandal some years ago, is a well-known political boss and a kind of  "King of Beggars" of Mexico City. Holding control of several street vendor and illegal occupant organizations, Mr. Bejarano is the force to reckon in local Mexico City politics. It is feared that Mr. Bejarano wants to hold the UACM in his power in order to control its 53,000,000 USD annual budget, offer jobs as favor to its followers, and more important, to form with its students an army of political cadres capable of strangling this City.
I urge you to send an e-mail to Mr. Marcelo Ebrard Casaubon, Mayor of Mexico City, at:

mebrard@df.gob.mx

expressing your concern about the political violence that threatens to destroy our young university.
